(Tallahassee, FL) A recent report from a newspaper in deep red, central Florida painted a vivid picture of the horrible conditions under which most migrant farm workers do their jobs. The report cited an incident in which a migrant farm worker was taken to the shade of a tomato plant after spending hours in the relentlessly blazing sun without a break and suffering from dizzy spells. Before collapsing, the woman reportedly exclaimed, “I see Jesus and he is coming for me!” A farm supervisor asked one of the Latino farm workers nearby to translate what she said, after which, assuming the woman was delirious, allowed her to remain at rest since she invoked the name of their lord and savior.
A local TV station reached out to the woman’s husband, Jesus Morales, for comment. “After I go to her, she calms down. I gave her water and now is good,” he said in broken English.
Farm workers all over central and southern Florida had begun earlier this year to organize for better working conditions, but the sun-dried state’s political machinery went into motion preemptively. In support of their MAGA Cult State Governor, the Florida Legislature wrote and passed a law banning mandatory breaks for farm workers. DeSantis lauded the landmark legislation, adding, “Farm owners and employers are now protected from government intrusion requiring farm workers to stay hydrated and healthy. A bunch of WOKE rules protecting migrant farm workers in our fantasy land are unnecessary and unwanted. This is what Make America Great Again looks like in the great state of Dizziness,” recalling how freed African Slaves were previously happy to work under the same horrible conditions in the citrus groves during the Jim Crow era of the 1950’s-60’s.
“If we lose too many migrant workers to the heat and our farmers start suffering economically, I will authorize a limited number of future illegal immigrants to be bussed from the Texas border to central Florida instead of Martha’s Vineyard,” Coyote Ron added, the nickname given DeSantis by the Mexican drug cartels.
We have a bunch of cousins in Florida, all northern transplants. New Jersey and Massachusetts. I really don't remember it being so conservative growing up. I think the Supreme Court Decision of 1980 turned them to the dark side. It is how it starts.
DeSantis has newly christened Florida, The Free State of Florida. Calling it the land of liberty. I find it hard to argue these new attributions. Florida, under his governorship has most certainly become a state freeing itself of governmental ethical constraints, freed of common sense, freeing women of their reproductive rights, freeing farm workers from being treated humanely, freeing insurance companies from being sued, freeing developers up from taking responsibility for their builds … the list goes on and on. Truly all of those involved have liberties the likes of which they never thought they’d have in their lives or work.
