A last-minute case on the Supreme Court’s shadow docket was ruled on just prior to it recessing from King making duties. In a 6 to 3 split decision along liberal-conservative lines, the SCOTUS conveyed personhood on guns. The plaintiffs who brought the suit are the NRA, the Gun and Munitions Association (GAMA), and the Pro-Life Coalition.
Delivering the majority opinion, Justice Gorsuch cited the precedent of bestowing first amendment rights on corporations in the First National Bank of Boston v. Bellotti, 435 U.S. 765 (1978) and Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission, 558 U.S. 310 (2010). “Guns have been denied their civil rights for too long. Now they have a voice alongside other fictional legal entities like corporations.”
I find it interesting that for most republicans, gun rights are more pivotal than any other right or freedom Americans are afforded. 47’s executive orders have touched on most other rights and freedoms in a negative way, but not gun rights!
I’ve owned guns, I’ve used guns and been issued gun(s) in the military. And yet I struggle to understand this mystical fascination with guns many Americans have; especially military-style assault rifles - - designed, tested, and produced for inflicting maximum damage on the human body.
